The bus stop is near KU Ruiru Campus, along the busy Thika Highway.

Were said that many students had been killed and others sustaining severe injuries as they cross the road, to Ruiru campus.

"Most of the students in Ruiru campus take their studies in main campus but are accommodated in Ruiru campus and the hostels around, many lives have been lost as students cross the road back to the campus," said Were on Sunday.

He also pointed out that the government did not include the area in the proposed 12 footbridges to be built along the highway and urged them to do so.

"This dark spot was not included in the government plan as in need of a footbridge but we want to urge the government to erect one immediately to protect the lives of our students," said Were.

The student's president said most students avoid using the railway underpass at Gwa Kairu due to high insecurity.

"The underpass is far from campus and there are dangerous muggers particularly at night who attack and rob students," he added.
