Independent presidential candidate Dr Japheth Kavinga Kaluyu has conceded defeat, saying "to be a leader, you have to sacrifice".

Kavinga whose provisional results showed he was sixth, 11,288 votes (0.08%) after Ekuru Aukot, and slightly ahead of Silas Jirongo, said he would support whoever will be declared the president, by the IEBC.

"We hope other candidates will accept defeat. There is still 2022 and it is not very far. I promised I will be decisive; I was hoping I will wake up in State House," said Kavinga, Wednesday evening.

Addressing the press at the national tallying centre at the Bomas of Kenya, he noted Kenyans had shown interest in him, given the number of votes he received, being a first time presidential candidate.

He further hailed the electoral body, IEBC, saying it conducted the polls, in a peaceful manner.

"We thank IEBC for conducting a peaceful process. It is very peaceful outside, I thank the Interior Ministry also. This is just not about voting, this is about Kenya and her peace, we fought a good fight," he added.
