Despite half of the presidential running candidates opting out of the debate scheduled today, organisers insist it will go on as planned.
According to the chairman of the steering committee organizing the debates Wachira Waruru, the debate, which will be held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, will go on as earlier planned.
“We will host the other half,” Waruru said in a short text message to a local daily.
The debate seemed to have been put off after Deputy President William Ruto, who is still campaigning at the Coast with President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (Nasa) counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka out of the country, said they will not attend the debate.
Ruto claimed that no one informed him of the debated, accusing the organisers of poor communication.
“I’m very surprised with this debate; nobody has engaged me about it. Surely a little courtesy on date, content and rules of engagement would do,” he wrote on his twitter page.
Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa, who has been appointed to represent DP Ruto in the debate, said through a Facebook post that he was ready to face off with all the running mates.
“I feel energised to play my civic responsibility to expose Nasa’s lack of substance and vision for this country as we expound on the transformative agenda of 2017-2022,” Mr Ichung'wa said.
