The conference which had been organised by the drivers and scheduled to take place at 10.00am at Athi River Divisional Officer's offices flopped after members of the press opted to stay away.

“We waited impatiently till 1.00pm but never saw any journalist from any of the many media houses that have reporters and correspondents in this region,” lamented a disappointed John Sambu.

Sambu is one of the drivers and a member of the Truck Drivers Association which had called for the press conference to address the media on their plight as drivers.

He said they were facing lots of challenges while undertaking their duties that included terms and conditions of their work, poor remuneration and insecurity given that most of them traverse numerous counties and countries while exporting expensive goods.

Sambu wondered why all the journalists from the region ‘coincidentally’ failed to appear for the press conferences coverage arguing they were an ignored group of people.

Most of the journalists from the region contacted by this writer, confirmed they had been invited to the press conference but were adamant to give reasons why they failed to turn up.
