The Nakuru Human Rights Network (NAHURINET) leaders have said that the dominance of the county government and the county assembly by one coalition has killed the aspect of oversight completely.

Speaking at Nakuru town Tuesday morning, the networks’ director David Kuria said that the civil society groups should take up the duty of over sighting the government and the county assembly to ensure that they do not violate the constitution and that they deliver all the promises they made during their campaigns.

“The civil society must now come out and be the opposition to ensure that things are done in the right manner because our county assembly and the county executive are the same thing and no one can check on the other. As the civil society, we must stand up and offer objective opposition in this county,” he said.

Kuria said that their objective as pressure groups is not to criticize for the sake of it but to ensure that no scandals are swept under the carpet.

“By criticizing the government does not mean that we are its enemies, but we just want to keep them awake and push them to do what they should be doing in the right way,” he said.

Kuria reminded wananchi that they also have role to play in ensuring that the government follows the constitution to the latter and asked them to utilize powers given to them by the constitution in keeping the government in check.
