The push for the secession of the Coast region is not only ill-timed but also ill-advised, a section of Kilifi elders have said.Led by Emmanuel Kadenge, the elders warned Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi against spearheading the secession debate, terming it a miscalculated move.Kadenge faulted the duo for pushing for the secession of the region instead of addressing important issues that affect the people. The elders said residents in Kilifi and Mombasa have continued to suffer despite the two taking over the leadership of their respective counties.Kadenge further questioned why Joho and Kingi want the region to be independent, yet the constitution has empowered them through county governments.“Why should we be bothered yet we have devolved governments where each county has its own share that it receives from the national government?” asked Kadenge, as quoted by Baraka FM.George Fondo, who unsuccessfully vied for the Ganze MCA seat asked the two governors to be accountable instead of pushing for what he termed as selfish interests. He also asked them to explain why they never supported Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) leader Omar Mwamnuadzi when he was pushing for the secession of the region.Their remarks were echoed by John Munga, the vice chairman of the Kauma Council of Elders, who warned Kingi and Joho against misusing their influence.
