Nyeri Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga is a man under intense pressure to resign.
Although the constitution is clear that he ascends to power after the death of Governor Wahome Gakuru, a section of leaders in the county are insisting that a fresh election be called where Kahiga contests as one of the candidates.
It is said that those opposed to his swearing in claim that since he has previously worked as a teacher, he will not manage to handle the tough duties that come on the governor's shoulders.
“We are aware what the law provides, but let Mr Kahiga allow people to vote again in an election where he is also a candidate so that whoever wins can have full mandate of the people,” said one of the leaders quoted by the Standard.
There has been several meetings attended by prominent personalities in the county, Jubilee leaders and top of their agenda were efforts to have Kahiga resign first.
In case this happens, the county leadership will come under Speaker John Kaguchia who will be acting as governor until the county holds a by-election within 60 days.
The incoming governor has however denied claims that he is a man under pressure.
“There has been no attempt to undercut me and I am not under any pressure, it was purely my choice. I needed to give my brother a decent burial,” he said.
“The legal advice that I am getting is that I need to get this out of the way and the inauguration will happen on Monday,” he said.
