The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is currently under pressure to hit its targeted voters.
By last week, the commission had only registered around 700,000 voters which is a major blow to the commission as it was targeting 4 million voters.
The government officials have, therefore, questioned the commission of what it will do to hit its target. Earlier, the commission complained of not having enough funds to sustain the process even after receiving some money from the EU. The commission is said to have been given sh560 million by the EU.
Westlands MP, Timothy Wanyonyi said that IEBC failed since it did not campaign enough. Wanyonyi said the few registered voters were only following what the opinion leaders had told them.
‘‘It is only political leaders who have been calling on people to register as voters. The IEBC has not done much,’’ said Wanyonyi.
The commission on its side said the budget it needed was not met by the government making it hard for it to carry out more campaigns.
The commission is yet to communicate if the registration exercise will be extended or not.
