A Senator has told President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure the two-third gender rule is applied in the appointment of new cabinet secretaries.
Rose Nyamunga (nominated) said on Wednesday in an interview with a local radio station the law is clear on the balance between male and female representatives of the cabinet and it would be wrong for the head of state to ignore that.
Uhuru has already appointed nine out the expected 22 cabinet secretaries and out the nine, there is no woman.
In an address to the nation on January 5, Uhuru retained Cabinet secretaries Fred Matiang’i (Interior), Charles Keter (Energy), Najib Balala (Tourism), Henry Rotich (Treasury), Joe Mucheru (ICT) and James Macharia (Transport). Matiang'i remained acting Education CS.
He also appointed new Cabinet secretaries who included former Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko, former Marsabit governor Ukur Yatani and former Turkana Senator John Munyes.
"He should be the last person to ignore matters women," Nyamunga.
"Out of the 13 positions remaining I expect women to get their rightful share of nine posts. A woman is important in every sphere of life."
During the appointments Uhuru also picked former Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua to replace Lawrence Lenayapa as State House Comptroller. Lenayapa was appointed Kenya's ambassador to the Netherlands.
Political analysts say delayed naming of the remaining cabinet secretaries is because of the unhappiness expressed by Deputy President William Ruto who is said to be unhappy with the president's new CS's line up.
