The push for the secession of the Coast region is ill-timed, National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) commissioner Adan Mohamed has said. Mohamed has called upon Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi and his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho among other leaders from the region to drop the campaign for the sake of national peace. Addressing different stakeholders during a women’s dialogue forum in Kilifi on Wednesday, Mohammed said the Coast region has greatly benefitted from the national government, adding that secession is not necessary at this time.“Those who are calling for secession are doing so under the guise of marginalisation. The devolved system of government created the Equalisation Fund which runs for 20 years from 2013,” said Mohammed, as quoted by The Star.Joho and Kingi have argued that the Coast region has been sidelined by the national government in matters of development. The leaders have affirmed that they will not back down in their push for self-rule, which they said is the only solution to marginalisation and the historical land injustices facing the region.Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has already tabled a bill to push for the agenda. Kaloleni MP Paul Katana on Monday said the leaders from the region will embark on a tour to push for the agenda and woo residents in the region to support the campaign.
