Speaking at Bomachoge Chache constituency during the commissioning of Riagongera Primary School rural electrification project, the project' chariman Simon Gicharu said that the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) had spent Sh439 million on the project in the two counties.

"REA has spent 256 million shillings in Kisii County to electrify 893 schools and 183 million shillings in Nyamira County to electrify 405 schools,” said Gicharu.

The chairman said that since the authority began operating in 2007, it has aligned its activities with the Vision 2030 economic blueprint adding that their primary goal is to have all Kenyans enjoy a high quality of life.

“We want to ensure that every Kenyan household is connected with electricity by the year 2030,” Gicharu said.

He said that their main target is to connect all public facilities, including trading centres, public schools, health facilities and water supply systems.

“The main focus of REA is to supply electricity to all unelectrified public primary schools to comply with the government’s agenda of accelerating the uptake of ICT in our schools,” Gicharu said.

He said out of 21,300 public primary schools, 18,265 have been electrified and work is underway in the remaining 3,035 schools and will be completed by 30th April.
