A man who was released from jail on Friday following President Uhuru Kenyatta's pardon was on Sunday caught stealing offering at a local church in Laikipia County.

Lucas Ngugi Njoroge, was among petty offenders released by President Uhuru on Mashujaa Day and he was he was serving time at the Nyahururu Prison.

Agnes Wambui, a worshipper at African Independent Pentecostal Church, said members became suspicious when Njoroge rose from his seat during offertory time and pretended to make his contribution.

He is alleged to have dipped his hand into the offertory basket but instead of dropping his contribution, he took out Sh900.

Area Assistant Chief Charles Ngunjiri, said he rescued the man from worshippers who wanted to beat him.

According to the administrator,  Njoroge first denied stealing the money but he later admitted that he had stolen from the offerings basket.

“He later changed his story and said that he was in the process of putting the money back into the basket after realizing that it was wrong to steal from the church,” Ngunjiri is quoted by Nation.

The suspect was later taken to the Ol Jabet Police Post.

Nyahururu Officer Commanding Police Division Ezekiel Chepkwony confirmed that the police o were holding Mr Njoroge and will take him to court once investigations are done.
