Prisoners from the Kisii GK Main Prison have appealed to the Government to consider issuing ex-prisoners with certificates of good conduct after they have completed their jail terms, to clear their names from the criminal black list.
In a memorandum read by one of the prisoners, Ben Momanyi during the tour of the facility by the Principal Secretary, State Department of National Government, Josephita Mukobe, the inmates lamented that after completing their jail terms and probations, they were still treated as criminals especially when they were looking for employment.
Momanyi regretted that after completing their jail sentences, ex-prisoners still had their names attached with a criminal tag as the government failed to clear their names through issuance of certificates of good conduct.
“The issue of one being in prison does not mean he remains a criminal for forever,” stated Momanyi
He lamented that the government's failure to issue ex-prisoners with certificates of good conduct after completing their prison sentences, condemned them as criminals in the eyes of the public.
The move, Momanyi complained, deprived ex-prisoners of their fundamental human rights to compete fairly with fellow citizens for various opportunities in the country.
