Prisoners in Kisii County have called on the judiciary to scrutinize defilement and rape cases carefully to ensure fair justice dispensation.
Speaking during a visit by members of the County Court users committee Friday the prisoners claimed that most of them had been fixed either by their wives or relatives to settle some domestic grudges.
Mr John Miruka a prisoner, accused women of using the tough laws protecting children and women against sexual harassment to punish men in the society.
"There is need for the judges to scrutinize the defilement and rape cases keenly before giving their ruling because women are exploiting the harsh law to punish men,” said Miruka
He said once sentenced, prisoners usually open up to colleagues in the cells and most of the ones jailed for defilement and rape found that they were actually innocent.
Speaking during the occasion, Kisii High Court Judge Winfridah Okwany who is also the court users’ committee chairperson said such cases had increased and the judiciary was working to establish the cause.
“The concerns are already being looked into to ensure there is justice to both men and women,” said Okwany
The Judge asked the magistrates in the lower courts to ensure that cases are heard and determined in the shortest time possible to avoid backlogs.
