Prisoners at the Kisumu Security Maximum Prison – Kodiaga got an early Christmas present after being visited by relatives on Saturday.

The visitors came from far and wide and met their relatives who are serving various sentences at the prison.

Some of the prisoners expressed joy after the prison management allowed relatives to visit them at the correctional facility, a few hours to Christmas.

“I thank the officer in charge of organizing this event as we have been able to meet our relatives. I am very happy. This should be done more frequently,” said one of the prisoners.

“We have never had the kind of noise that has been heard in this prison today. This means theirs is life here,” said another prisoner in reference to music that was part of the get-together.

Martin Akwayi who is the officer in charge of the Kodiaga Prison said that the get together will give the prisoners a psychological boost.

He said mingling with relatives will remind them that they are still members of the society, despite being behind bars.

“Visiting someone in the hospital or a police cell is very normal. Prison visits are very special because it is time for some prisoners to admit their mistakes to relatives and ask for forgives,” said Akwai.
