The private sector also has a role to play in protecting the environment. This is according to German environmental and sustainability experts, who today met with their Kenyan counterparts at the German Embassy Green Economy Cycle Conference.

The conference brought together experts from Germany and Kenya to discuss topics such as waste management and the future of green businesses in Kenya

While addressing the press at the conference, German Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, Michael Derus, said that there is a growing awareness among Kenyan businesses and the public about the importance of environmental protection.

“The country needs more stringent enforcement of existing environmental laws, adding that heavy punishment for offenders would help deter environmentally harmful practices among businesses and the community,” Derus said.

The conference comes on the back of the just-concluded United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, which focused on curbing pollution. Kenya was feted for its plastic bag bans, and President Uhuru Kenyatta urged other countries to follow suit.
