Nominated Member of County Assembly Esther Njeri Mengere noted that there have been increased cases of defilement among such children, with many of them contracting venereal diseases.

Speaking to the press in Nakuru after meeting with about 100 parents of children with special needs, Mengere said that many of the children were abused by their relatives and as they were too weak to fight, they ended up living in a tormented life.

“We have been particularly receiving cases of especially children on wheelchairs who ended in hospital and most of the parents discover when it is too late,” she added.

Ms Mengere added that they were going to start door-to-door campaigns for the special children in order to earmark their progress and their health record, citing that many had been neglected due to their poor financial status.

The MCA also pointed out that most of the abused children died or developed serious complications during childbearing.

“Many have got fistula or have gotten stillborn children due to such complications. It is also very hard for the caretakers as they now have to live and fend for another mouth which becomes so tricky,” she added.

With the rights of persons with disabilities well pronounced in the constitution, people found abusing them sexually or aiding the vice are expected to pay dearly by serving long jail terms.
