Kisumu Senator Prof Anyang Nyong'o has been in the political ring for quite a while.

His aggressive nature in politics has earned him respect both in his rural home in Kisumu, nationally and internationally.

But who exactly is Prof Nyong’o?

Well, apart from him being a politician, there is much more about him that you need to know.

Prof Nyong’o, currently, is the Senator for Kisumu County. He won the Kisumu Senatorial duel to become the first occupant of the seat in 2013.

He is a reknown academician as his title, ‘Professor’, says it.

And did you know that Nyong’o graduated with a First Class honors degree from Makerere University where he studied political science?

And as if that is not enough, he was the first Kenyan to receive the First Class Honours Degree at the Faculty of Social Science, Department of Political Science at East Africa's oldest institution of higher learning.

Makerere University, because of his outstanding performance still honors him to date. Every year, the university organises a public lecture where he is invited to deliver a keynote address.

After completing his undergraduate studies, he proceeded to undertake his Masters degree and subsequently PhD studies at the University of Chicago, USA.

He lectured at the famous University of Nairobi and as a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Mexico and Addis Ababa prior to joining the American Academy of Sciences where he was the head of programmes.

Nyong’o was involved in the struggle against authoritarian rule in Kenya in the late 80s and early 90s and was among the leaders who made a break through into multiparty politics in 1992 under then President, Daniel arap Moi.

He was once the Minister for Planning and National Development as well as Minister for Medical Services.

Socially, Nyong’o is married to Dorothy Nyong’o.

The couple has six children including popular US-based actress, Lupita Nyong’o.

He is currently gunning for the Kisumu gubernatorial seat and is expected to battle it out with incumbent Jack Ranguma in 2017.
