In an area with high levels of poverty, Manyatta Youth Empowerment Program has come out strong and determined to change the terrible situations in the slum area.
The program which is primarily targeting the youth is geared towards making the slum dwellers to live to their full potential and be responsible members of the community.
Through its capacity building programme, the unemployed but educated youth are trained on the basic concepts of creating employment rather than looking for employment.
The uneducated youth on the other hand are trained on basic employability skills with clear focus on hospitality industry and motor vehicle mechanics.
The organization's youth development center on the other hand offers business based care to the youth.
Selected youth are allowed to present business ideas and proposals which are then evaluated by the panel.
The best 10 proposals are funded and operated jointly with a view to foster their growth.
Youth vacation center targets the youth out of school.
This provides life skills to youth who drop out of school including dressmaking, carpentry and masonry.
Later on, products are sold at a subsidized prices to make money for the whole group.
According to the founder of the group Kevin Obare, it is his dream to see a society that is empowered and where the youth are underutilized.
He says his project is meant to make the youth active in development and to ensure that none is left out.
"I do believe that the youth can change this area only if they are empowered. I will always work hand in hand with the youth in this area to make them useful members of the society," said the JKUAT graduate.
