This is according to the statistics released by the National Government in partnership with Kenya Aids Control Unit.

Mwangi said that the statistics could be averted if only Kiambu youths could be subjective and self employed to reduce the idleness and unemployment which impacts the current statistics.

He said that Kiambu alone has more than 60,000 commercial sex workers a statistics which he believes is lead by lack of employment in the county.

He also said that this could be attributed by the fact that Thika is an industrial town hence attracting more people from all walks of life.

Mwangi who was speaking in Thika town on Thursday expressed his concerns with Kiambu youths indulging in unsafe sex.

“Statics show that HIV/AIDs has drastically gone high in the town as opposed to previous years,” said Mwangi.

Thika District Aids and STIs Control (DASCO) chairman, Oscar Ndombi, who was present in the meeting said that the rate of prostitution is becoming rampant and the figures might increase if the government fails to intervene.

He said that Thika is the major contributor of the statistics where 45,000 prostitutes are based in the sub county with only 319 men sex workers who are gay.

Ndombi said that Thika has two centers that support sex workers where WAPATE initiative is the major contributor and Afya Plus Kamili being the supplier of the condoms in the region.

He urged youth not to involve themselves in unsafe sex.
