Garissa County politicians have been asked to promise that they will hold peaceful campaigns and shun politics of incitement.

Hamud Sheikh, Sultan of the Aulian clan on Wednesday said Garissa Governor and Garissa Township MP seats are among the highly contested positions and they are generating a lot of heat.

“Although we have never witnessed political violence in Garissa, it is good to be proactive. I’m not predicting any violence, but as an elder, I feel we should not take things for granted,” Hamud said.

Garissa County Governor contestants are incumbent Nathif Jama and Ali Korane of Jubilee Party while Garissa township MP aspirants are Aden Duale of Jubilee and Wiper's  Farah Maalim.

According to the Sultan, the leaders and elders should educate residents on the need to desist from violence.

He urged IEBC in collaboration with county security team to bring together all aspirants for round table talks.

“The same should be communicated to the electorate through a baraza, where all the aspirants commit to using civil language and holding peaceful rallies,” Sultan said.

He added that the meeting should be convened soon after the Ramadhan ends.

“We expect politicians will hit the ground running immediately after Ramadhan,” Hamud said.

“It’s for this reason that we want the politicians to come together, shake hands and swear that they will carry out peaceful campaigns, devoid of confrontation,” he added.
