Kisumu County government has been challenged to come up with strategies to help decongest the busy parked streets.
The residents have asked the county government to have a metropolitan plan to decongest the lakeside town, arguing that it makes it easy for the spread of airborne diseases and other criminal activities.
Speaking on Monday at a Kisumu hotel during a forum by UN habitat to promote town status, Nominated MCA Lydia Odhiambo challenged the county government to draft a proper plan to see that the town is decongested, by restricting commercial vehicles within the city centre.
She further explained that proper planning would see the town decongested, becoming easy to access.
She suggested that subways can be added within the city centre, like in Kondelee, as the town was in city status and was prone to be parked if not properly planned with.
“We can plan to decongest the parked town by coming up with better plans to see its easy access,” said Odhiambo.
Kisumu residential engineer Thomas Okumu also welcomed the sentiments, emphasizing on proper plan as the only way to ease the town.
He added that the town can be decongested by opening ways and expanding market places and other open fields.
“Kisumu town is in a city status, and it’s our challenge to properly plan it by decongesting the town through expanding ways and markets,” said Okumu.
