Speaking in Kikuyu town on Friday, the area county Assembly Member (MCA) of Kiambu county Binary Wainaina blamed parents for abdicating their duties adding that many children had dropped out of school in the area due alcohol.
“Many energetic men have died due to excessive consumption of alcohol leading to the loss of manpower that has impacted negatively on this county's economy,” said Wainaina.
He said this during a public participation forum where wananchi were giving their views and contributions to the Kiambu Alcohol Drinks Bill 2015 that is yet to be discussed by the county assembly. The bill proposes to control the production, sale, distribution and promotion of alcohol and for the improved treatment and rehabilitation for addicts.
The MCA disclosed that the bill is also set to regulate the alcoholic drinks that have been licensed by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
“Operators should make sure that they follow the set rules and regulations like having a business license and it should be displayed where it can be seen by the relevant authorities,” Wainaina said.
He however further said that the taxes by authorities like NACADA, Public health department and other government agencies should reduce since they have reduced working hours for the bar operators.
