Speaking to Officer Daniel Musau at the Machakos Police Station, he said that such cases can be avoided if proper measures are taken.

The thieves usually take advantage of lax security practices at the premises, but one can always butch up at the security front, and first of all, employ proper lighting.

As most thefts usually occur at night, dark sections of the premises' location offer premier hiding places for the burglars. Make sure entry points have sufficient lighting, and all corners of the building as well.

A little-known fact he revealed is that one should also prefer to leave inside lighting on as well. Marauders are deterred when they think someone is inside the building when they see the lights on.

Always lock doors, windows and check the ventilation system (if any is available) and check for any weakness which can be taken advantage of and used as an entry point.

Replace weak bars and frames on doors and windows and reinforce them. Use only the best locks available. They are not guaranteed to stop burglars but they may get caught while trying to break a particularly strong lock.

In case of money left at the premises, reduce the amount by storing it at different points, and always change the locks or combinations of the safe regularly and without informing your staff.

Most successful thefts occur with an inside man. Install an alarm system with video feeds you can monitor from the outside, and preferably with a backup generator that kicks in immediately in case the thieves decide to cut the direct power lines.

And always remember to use a security team you trust and ensure the guards on duty are rotated regularly. This way, you ensure better security at your place of business and sleep better at night.
