More than 200 youths from Matungulu, Tala and Kangundo constituencies on Wednesday matched from Tala Town to the residence of Machakos Senator Muthama demanding for money.
Allegedly, the county government had failed pay them from a water mapping contract given last week. The furious protestors blocked the two roads from Tala to Kangundo hence paralysing transport in the area.
Speaking during the protest, Dickson Mwanzia, one of the demonstrators stated that he has not been paid a dime from a total of 6,200 shillings.
“They had promised to pay us through Mpesa by Friday last week but up to now we have not received any money. Some of us are the bread winners of our families so the county government should pay us what we worked for,” said Mwanzia.
However, some protestors stated they had received half the amount agreed upon and no communication had been done.
Machakos Sub-County Commissioner Evelyn Kavuu intervened later and explained to the furious residents that their dues would be paid immediately.
Kavuu stated that the delays had been due to most of the workers providing other phone contacts apart from Safaricom lines which made it impossible for the payments.
“The delays are because we were using M-Pesa services. This occurred after we found out that many people had provided other contacts which caused the delay. When the situation is corrected, the payments will be made immediately,” said Kavuu.
