More than 300 residents of Umoja estate in Thika Sub County have protested against grabbing of their land by a private developer.

The residents who carried twigs and chanting songs accused the developer of using fake documents to acquire title deed of their land.

Addressing media at the disputed land Beatrice Wambui explained that the residents were allocated the land by the defunct Municipal council of Thika in 1986.

She added that they were moved from where they were residing to the disputed land in order to pave way for the construction of Umoja primary school.

Mary Njeri who lost her husband when they were evicted from the land called on the national land commission to move with speed and revoke any title deed given to any private developer.

Njeri who is 86 years old says the defunct owners of the land have been forced to build makeshift houses on road reserve as their land has been grabbed.

On January last year more than 100 families in the estate were left homeless and property worth millions of shillings destroyed after their homes were demolished.

The demolition took place at 4am under the supervision of more than 100 heavily armed police officers and over 300 hired youth.

Former Kiambu County Council Clerk PMG Kamau who has volunteered to agitate for the rights of the residents called for the disbandment of National Land Commission.

He said that the commission is watching helplessly as the residents are being robbed of their land adding that if the land is not reverted back to the owners, he will initiate an inquiry for the dismissal of the Lands Commission.
