The fighters who held a meeting in Githurai on Wednesday to deliberate on matters affecting their welfare criticised the government for not looking at their welfare.

They wondered why the government that ought to treat them like heroes has opted to abandon them.

"We had thought that when they took a bill to parliament to look after the heroe's welfare things would work for us but it has not been the case," said Ndichu Wa Gachomoku, the chairman.

 "We liberated this country and paid taxes when we were still strong; let the government to at least appreciate our efforts by giving us free medicare," added Ndichu.

This comes as one of them Wainaina Chege alias General Kugeria has been fighting with arthritis.

Chege is said to be struggling with the sickness since late 1990s.

"I have been referred to India by the doctor but the cost is too high for me and I request the government to help me," said Kugeria.
