Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Labour Social Services and East Africa Affairs Susan Mochache has said the low voter registration numbers in Kisii County is an indication that the region’s residents have not appreciated the value of the electoral process.
Mochache said Gusii community should understand the elections is the chance to elect visionary leaders who will implement the people’s development agenda across the country
IEBC has so far registered 21,000 voters in Kisii and 10,000 voters in Nyamira counties.
Speaking in Kisii town On Sunday, Mochache encouraged the elderly to register as voters, saying they too had a stake in the country’s governance.
“Our aged population also has a right to participate in the electoral process since their contribution as senior citizens is vital to the nation’s well-being,” she said.
Interior security CS Joseph Nkaissery visited Kisii County last week and gave chiefs and assistant chiefs a one week ultimatum to mobilize the registration of at least 60 percent of the region’s 450,000 ID card holders without voters’ cards.
Nkaissery was shocked due to low voter turnout in Kisii calling it unacceptable and uncalled for.
He asked them to work with village elders to ensure the people were educated on the importance of exercising their democratic right.
