Addressing the press at Eldoret town on Saturday, the PS said that the State has put in place initiatives to help farmers access original seeds and fertiliser.

The PS added that the government will firmly deal with fake distributors and sellers of seeds.

“Farmers should be careful when purchasing seeds and fertiliser. There are those who will approach you and persuade you to buy seeds which are not genuine and that might affect your yields,” said PS Kariuki.

She noted that existence of fake seeds in the market is a threat to food security and development adding that the government is keen to promote food security and fight hunger and starvation.

The PS at the same time asked the farmers diverse their farming saying it will help in the fight against hunger.

She also asked the county governments to put in place measures that will promote farming saying that farming remains one of the key economic activities in the country and must be boosted.

PS Kariuki said in effort to encourage farming among Kenyans, the government will provide subsidised fertilisers and seeds.

She assured farmers that the State will set aside more money to buy maize from farmers cautioning them against selling their produce at a throw away prices.
