Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Andrew Tuimur launched the programme on Thursday at Sambut village.

County livestock director of veterinary services Dr Joseph Njuguna was also present at the launch.

The cattle were vaccinated against Rift Valley Fever and Black water anthrax for free.

Speaking during the launch, Tuimur urged farmers to uphold disease control in livestock in order to increase their production.

He said it is paramount to vaccinate cattle so as to also rid animal diseases that are transmitted to human beings.

“I am very happy that we have launched this programme since national and county government have partnered to uplift agriculture in this region and countrywide,” Tuimur said.

Tuimur said most farmers are waiting for the disease outbreak in order to vaccinate their animals which are not the case.

“We should vaccinate our cattle regularly so that we can prevent such diseases. This will keep them healthy hence increased levels of production,” he added.

Dr Njuguna cautioned farmers against animal movement saying diseases are transmitted through such ways.

He said movement permits should be obtained to certify that animals to be transported are free from diseases so as to avoid the transmission of the diseases.
