PSV have protested over plans by the National Transport and Safety Authority to increase inspection fee.

The operators want NTSA to get rid of extortion cartels before increasing the fee.

The NTSA wants to increase the Sh1,000 inspection fee, which was set in 1995.

Accordiong to Matatu Owners Association chairman Simon Kimutai,  they don’t oppose the plan of raising the levy but NTSA must first overhaul the inspection centres and remove cartels that hike fees to more than Sh3,000, which is not receipted .

Kimutai added that PSV operators are losing Sh200 million annually to corrupt NTSA officials.

He called for a lifestyle audit  of staff at the inspection centres.
