Uasin Gishu County Education Executive Enock Muigei has cautioned members of the public against giving money to street children but instead channel the same through their rehabilitation and street children centers.
The executive stated that giving street children money is not helping but the same would help if channeled to their centers.
He noted that many of the street children who receive the money from well-wishers end up using to drink and engage in other unlawful acts.
“We want to politely ask well-wishers to stop giving money to street children, the same can be donated to children centers,” he said.
Muigei raised concerns over the rise in number of street children in Eldoret and adjacent towns and estates.
He revealed that many students are dropping out school to join the streets and spend their time begging.
The educations boss added that some of the children come from well-off families and wondered why they would take part in begging.
He asked parents to ensure that their children are in school stating that the county will soon crackdown on street children.
The executive revealed that police reports indicate that street urchins take part in criminal activities.
He noted that more street rehabilitation centers will be created to help the affected children and adults who roam the streets.
