Kiambu sub-county environment officer, Mr. James Kaboro said that the county government is devising strategies on waste disposal that will ensure that all waste is collected and disposed appropriately to discourage people from burning litter.

He said that burning of litter can cause emission of carbon monoxide and other harmful gases which cause degradation and destruction of the ozone layer leading to adverse climatic conditions.

“There are many health issues related to litter burning as we inhale the polluted gases. Burning plastics and rubber produces a range of poisonous compounds that causes air pollution hence threatening human health,” Kaboro remarked.

He said that smoke from burning litter can cause health complications such as asthma, bronchitis and even heart diseases especially among children.

Mr. Kaboro advised that residents should sort out litter and solid waste for easier management and disposal.

He said that through these companies, plastics which pose a bigger threat will be recycled for more use.

The environment officer called upon the members of the public to maintain a healthy and hygienic environment.
