The government has initiated a programme that will see public schools obtain security funds to enable learning institutions enhance safety in their respective institutions.
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof Jacob Kaimenyi says that insecurity in learning institutions has been a major concern for the government following attacks witnessed in North Eastern region, with the worst being the Garissa University College.
Speaking at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) today, the CS urged the county governments to coordinate with the local security committees in ensuring that learning environment is safe and secure.
He said that security is paramount for learners, adding that due to insufficient safety, over 90 public schools have remained closed in north eastern region.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education of Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary General Akello Misori urged the education CS to bring on board every stakeholder in matters pertaining education.
Akello’s remark comes in the backdrop of a looming disagreement between the ministry and various stakeholders in the education sector concerning education policies and regulations.
He called on the government to ensure that learning resumes in the affected regions.
