The Pumwani Hospital is making strides to become the first hospital in Kenya with a milk bank.
According to Pumwani Hospital medical superintendent Lazarus Omondi, they are seeking re-accreditation by authorities and are optimistic that they will house the first human milk bank in Kenya.
According to Omondi, mothers will receive safe, donated breast milk that will take care for underweight, severely malnourished or orphaned babies.
In the Pumwani newborn unit, a quarter of all admissions suffer prematurity, low birth weight or both and these account for the most common reasons for their admission.
The unit has an overa; crude mortality rate of between four and 14 per cent.
Premature neonates contribute approximately 4.7 per cent of these.
