The Punda Amechoka campaign that was recently launched in Nakuru has been taken in earnest but has at the same time aroused sharply divided views from residents.

According to Sam Gitau who is spearheading the campaign in Nakuru, the Punda Amechoka campaign is not a replication of the Okoa Kenya campaign that is led by Cord.

Punda Amechoka specifically focuses on the issue of over-representation.

"Kenyans are overly represented and the burden lies on the common citizen. Our campaign is aimed at reducing this load of maintaining these representatives,” explained Gitau.

According to Gitau, the Punda Amechoka, Punguza Mzigo is aimed at reducing the number of counties from 47 to 16, reduce the number or constituencies from 290 to 200, remove the positions of Senators, Women reps and do away with nominated members of parliament and county assemblies.

However, there is another high number of residents who are skeptical about the initiative ostensibly because of those who are spearheading the campaign.

“How can we trust an initiative led by Hon Moses Kuria and Mugo wa Wairimu?” Felix Misoi quipped.

“The Okoa Punda has a lot of misplaced priorities. They are focusing on overspending instead of fighting corruption, killing devolution instead of protecting it and seeking publicity instead of real issues,” added Felix.
