Kisii County Governor James Ongwae has expressed concern over the low number of women pursuing high-end careers, as well engaging in politics.
Speaking during the official launch of the Kisii County Education Bursaries Fund at Gusii stadium on Tuesday the governor said many women pursue traditional subjects such as arts and education which were flooded with professionals.
He added that pursuing high-end subjects such as engineering, medicine and law would give them a higher competitive advantage when seeking jobs.
“The myth that women are more suited to certain careers should end. In Kisii County, for example, it is difficult to find a female architects, engineers, lawyers as well as doctors. This should change if we are to compete with men in careers,” he added.
The county boss called on women to be aggressive in seeking elective positions in next year’s general elections saying they have the numbers to capture all seats.
He voiced concern over the level of women participation in politics saying out of the 47 counties; only nine women were elected.
He also raised concern over the low transition rate of girls from primary to secondary schools and also to tertiary institutions blaming this on early pregnancies and marriages.
