With the runaway unemployment problem in Kenya especially among the youth, a phrase that depicts desperation and frustration among many people has come to be coined.

The phrase - bora kazi (just a job)- will tell you that many people nowadays are just interested in putting a meal on their tables irrespective of the means.

However, when it comes to jobs related with the dead, many people tend to be hesitant to embrace them. Think for instance of mortuary attendants, coffin makers or even grave diggers.

Not many are willing to go that direction. But this is not the case for Joseph Njuguna who makes tombstones and plaque at Gatitu, Thika on the Garissa highway.

His is not bora kazi because he says it is something he likes and adores.

"Sculptural and artistic work is something I have always liked doing since I was in primary school. I liked modelling. Art and craft was my favourite subject," Njuguna said on Thursday.

Njuguna who has been doing this work for close to 15 years now said passion can take one to unimaginable heights.

"Passion is what has kept me going in this job for that long irrespective of the earnings I make and the challenges I go through. I, have however, been able to do much with what I get from here", he said.

His advice to the youths is to exploit the potential they have in them and pursue their passions to the very end.

"With passion and desire to succeed you can overcome everything. Pursue your passion", Njuguna advised.
