The residents attributed the rising cases of accidents at the bridge to the trucks and trailers ferrying petroleum products to Uganda. The bridge has been a known black spot over the last many years.

They demanded that the Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Joshua Omukata addresses the accidents menace and set up a police check at Daraja Mbili junction as a way of reducing accidents on the road.

Thomas Karan, a resident, yesterday said that the number of accident cases caused by over-speeding trailers are on the rise at the bridge.

“When ferrying the petroleum products and other goods they are normally very slow because they are loaded, but on their way back from Busia, they over-speed causing accidents, most of which end up killing pedestrians,” said Karan.

Administration Police Officers at Daraja Mbili Junction Police Post, Joshua Odhiambo noted that the junction needed a police check to manage the speed at which the trailers were being driven at.

“We have a police check at Kisian junction and the next one along the route is past Chula-Yimbo just before Maseno, I think to help reduce the number of accidents caused by some rogue drivers, a police check at the point would help,” said AP.
