Learning has been paralysed at the Pwani University after lecturers at the institution decided to join their colleagues in the ongoing nationwide strike.
The over 150 lecturers at the university have vowed to stay away from classes until the government heeds to their demands.
Addressing journalists at the institution on Thursday, Chairman University of Academic Staff Union (UASU) Chris Ngeng, said they will not resume work until they reach an agreement with the government over their salaries.
He noted that Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) are taking home a lot of money whereas lecturers earn peanuts in the name of salaries despite many years of schooling.
Ngeng further said that they do not care how long it will take to negotiate over the salaries.
“It does not matter how long the strike takes but I assure all universities and the 27 sister universities that they are on the right side of the law and we will not go back to teaching until the government honours our previous agreement,” said Ngeng, as quoted by the Baraka FM.
Pwani University UASU treasurer Elizabeth Munyanya pointed an accusing finger at the government for politicising the issue of lecturer’s salaries.
