Quarantine has been declared at Kapkures ward, Soy Sub County, in Uasin Gishu County following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the area.
According to a notice signed by the Uasin Gishu Director of Veterinary Services, Dr Joseph Njuguna, all livestock, sheep, goats, pigs and all their products will be detained within the locality.
The notice, dated May 25, 2015 outlaws movement of livestock into or out of Kapkures without a permit from the veterinary department.
Dr. Njuguna has also ordered that animals from the area shall be herded as far as possible from any public road in a bid to minimise the spread of the disease.
He added that no livestock shall leave the area without having complied with such reasonable precautions for preventing the spread of the disease as may be required by a veterinary officer.
“Farmers should also bury carcasses from animals dying from the disease at a depth of not less than four feet deep or be burnt at the expense of the animal owner,” he said.
Meanwhile, the county veterinary office has put in place measures to help contain the disease.
