Nakuru County Government Nutrition and Reproductive Health coordinator, Nancy Chelule, has urged Kenyans to stop consuming food products availed in the market blindly.
Speaking during a Reproductive Health Workshop at Mericca Hotel on Thursday Chelule observed that most Kenyans risk their health by consuming foods readily available in the market without questioning their nutrition values.
“There is health risks related to the street foods, a fact that has far reaching health complications including reproductive health,” notes Chelule.
According to Chelule most foreign countries that import foods and other goods from Kenya among other African Countries lay down standards and restrictions on the kinds of foods to be exported for consumption.
"Kenyans we do not care about what we consume," notes Chelule.
She regretted that the government had not come up to terms with the health dangers involved with food consumption in the country.
She called on stake holders to formulate policies that will ensure that food consumers get adequate information and knowledge on the chemical compositions of food stuff in local markets.
According to the health experts some food qualities can pose danger to consumers in a variety of ways depending on the way they are cultivated, harvested, processed and stored.
“Kenyans should wake up and demand the right to know the composition of food products they consume,” said Chelule.
