Speaking on Wednesday, the Treasury CS, Henry Rotich told the select committee on IEBC reforms that they will be paid directly from the emergency account known as Contingency Fund.

"We do have contingency funds for that kind of unforeseen expenditure,” he said.

The Contingency Fund is usually allocated Sh5 billion and the commissioners have said Sh200 million would be enough to pay the time left in their contracts as well as gratuity.

"This for me is unforeseen if it occurs,” he told the Orengo and Kiraitu led committee.

Rotich was responding to the committee on IEBC reforms after making his presentation.

Rotich's remarks seem to be opening a window for a solution to the IEBC stalemate as one of the key issues has been payment of the commissioners should they choose to resign.

IEBC's integrity and independence has of late been questioned with Cord holding street protests demanding for its commissioners to quit before the next polls scheduled for next year,2017.
