Following the retirement of the former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, the race to succeed him is seemingly heating up.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) advertised for the position of the Chief Justice last week.

In an advert that appeared on dailies, the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Anne Amadi, asked qualified candidates to apply for the position.

"JSC anticipates that the recruitment process shall take about four months given the statutory timelines guiding the process and expects the new Chief Justice to be in office in October, 2016," Amadi said.

Following that advertisement for the position, many Kenyans including Lawyers, Judges and Scholars have applied for the position, and one such scholar is Prof Makau Mutua.

According to the sources close to Mutua, the former distinguished Professor of Law at Buffalo Law School in New York applied for the job last week and has the blessings of Dr Willy Mutunga and Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdulahi.

Ahmednassir took to his Twitter handle and said that Mutua is a formidable candidate for the position and insisted that his resume speaks for itself.

Prof Makau Mutua went to exile in the 1990s and since then, he has been lecturing in various US universities.

He has been a serious critic of President Uhuru Kenyatta administration and his name appeared several times in relation to the Kenyan cases at the ICC, the cases that were eventually terminated.
