Applications for the post of Chief Justice have intensified with the extension of the applications’deadline to Friday 7th.
Speaking to a local daily paper, Chief Registrar of the judiciary Ann Amadi said that the decision to extend the deadline was to allow more candidates to apply.
“We moved the deadline to Friday because of the public holiday on Thursday. We expect more applications on the last day,” said Anne Amadi.
Among the applicants for the post of Chief justice and president of the Supreme Court is former speaker of parliament Kenneth Marende.
Mr. Marende was elected to parliament as MP for Emuhaya constituency in 2007.He holds a degree of Laws from the University of Nairobi.
Kenya Human Rights Commission chairman Prof Makau Mutua has also applied for the position of CJ.
Prof Mutua is a distinguished scholar at the State University of Newyork. In 2014 wrote an article on a local paper stating that he will not accept Uhuru Kenyatta as president.
"As a matter of freedom of conscience and thought, I can't accept Uhuru Kenyatta as President of Kenya. I can't and I won't,” Mutua wrote in a local paper in December 2014.
Other applicants who have joined the race to succeed Dr Willy Mutunga as CJ are Supreme Court Judge Dr Smokin Wanjala, Court of Appeal Judges David Maranga and Alnashir Vishram, High Court judges Msagah Mbogholi and Judge Richard Mwongo.
Those who have applied for the position of Deputy Chief Justice include judges Martha Koome, Agnes Murgor and Lydia Achode.
