The incident which affected Optimum Lubricants Company Limited in Kikuyu town, sparked out at around noon in its main plant affecting a section of the factory.

Clouds of smoke could be noticed from a far billowing into the skies which attracted a lot of public attention but the law enforcement officers arrived at the scene on time to control the crowd.

In preliminary reports, it is alleged that the fire started as the normal operations in the factory were taking place.

“We were mixing some types of chemicals when a mild explosion ensued. A light fire started which then exploded affecting major part of the plant,” confirmed one of the workers who sought anonymity.

Fire fighters from Kikuyu sub-county, Limuru, Nairobi, G4S and National Youth Service came to the rescue. The fire which was burning huge owing to the oil products burning, took more than an hour for the team to extinguish.

The firefighters however managed to put out the fire and prevented the flames from gutting down the section that deals with petroleum products which could have caused massive destruction of even residential houses adjacent to the factory.

There were no casualties reported as most of the workers scampered for safety when an alarm was raised.
