Rai Group of Companies Chairman Jaswant Rai is now accusing his competitor of masterminding the supply and sale of cheap sugar allegedly stained with deposits of harmful metals.
Rai's West Kenya Sugar and Sukari Limited have largely been mentioned in the ongoing sugar fiasco, and are being accused of importing the product containing copper and mercury.
However, in an exclusive interview with Citizen TV on Friday, Rai who maintained that he is yet to release his import for sale, after shipping it to his factories for purification, instead accused his business competitor, South Nyanza Sugar (SONY Sugar), of illegally selling the substandard product.
Rai who, however, denied knowledge that the product contains the metals, claimed that the company embarked on packaging and selling its import at the port of Mombasa without further processing, despite being aware that it is unfit for use in its current state.
''Like myself, my competitor Sony Sugar also imported sugar but packaged and began selling it without even a single kilo reaching the company's factory for purification,'' said Rai who through his companies imported 180, 000 metric tonnes of the product from Brazil.
''About the alleged presence of metals in the sugar, I have never come across anything like that in my entire life but government agencies should investigate and confirm if the claim is true,'' he added.
His other companies involved in the fiasco are Amnei and the Nakuru-based Menengai Refineries companies.
