Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) leader Raila Odinga has acknowledged that he played a key part in appointing Isaac Hassan as chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

However, he gave reasons why he no longer wants Mr Hassan in the position.

“When I appointed him, I didn't know he was a thief. That is why the electoral commission cannot conduct a fair election,” Raila told mourners.

The opposition leader and his team have been leading a barrage of attacks on the electoral commission calling for its disbandment.

Speaking in Narok where he had attended a burial ceremony, Raila claimed that the commission has failed on its mandate and should pack and go home.

Raila maintains that Hassan and his colleagues have lost credibility and cannot conduct any other election.

“The commission should go home, whether they like or not they will go home,” Raila added.

The ruling Jubilee coalition has maintained that it is the senior members of opposition who put on board most of the electoral body commissioners.

Also in attendance at the burial was veteran politician William ole Ntimama who rallied Cord and Jubilee to find a middle ground to end the IEBC standoff.
