The Senator who also doubled as the party county chairman made the announcement of his departure from the party recently as he prepares to take on Governor James Ongwae in the 2017 polls.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity since he is not allowed to speak on behalf of the former PM, Raila expressed his disappointment over the unprecedented departure of Obure.

“During a lunch at Nyakoe Hotel on Saturday, the former PM spoke extensively about Obure’s departure. He was quite unhappy because both have worked for a long time together,” said the source.

“He opposed Obure’s gubernatorial candidature saying he would have allowed Ongwae to go for a second term given the great work they have both done for the ODM party. He even offered to find time to talk to Obure about his move to Jubilee Party,” added the source.

Senator Obure was appointed Minister of Public works by Raila during the grand coalition government and has since been key in consolidating the party’s support in Gusii region prior to his defection to Jubilee.
