Opposition leader Raila Odinga has said that the decision to withdraw charges against Deputy President William Ruto by the International Criminal Court (ICC) “spells doom for global efforts to fight impunity”.
The ODM leader was among the first leaders to congratulate Ruto after crimes against humanity charges against him were dropped by ICC's Trial Chamber on Tuesday, April 5, 2016.
Raila in his congratulatory message to Ruto said, “as ODM, we congratulate Deputy President William Ruto on the ruling by the International Criminal Court that he has no case to answer in regard to the post-election violence of 2007-2008.”
Raila however told France24.com on Tuesday in an interview that, “the ICC’s failure to try top Kenyan leaders for crimes against humanity is the country’s worst violence since independence.”
His recent remarks on the matter have been criticised by top Jubilee leaders, among them Elgeyo/Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, who is also a close ally of the DP.
“Finally the man (Raila) speaks his heart out and he is bitter that his "comrade" William Ruto is out...I am shocked he wishes Rule 68 applied to Ruto...double standards,” Murkomen posted on Twitter.
The Cord leader has on several occasions come out to rubbish allegations by Jubilee leaders, among them Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, that he fixed Ruto at the ICC.
